Singapore to Batam Maritime Travel Overview

Daily ferry services connect Singapore with Pulau Batam across several key maritime routes (Instarem). The sea crossing takes roughly 45 to 70 minutes on average, or approximately 50 minutes to just over an hour depending on the specific operator and prevailing sea conditions (littlebigreddot.com). A minimum transit time of 50 minutes is recorded on high-speed routes between Batam Centre and Singapore (redBus). Accounting for required check-in times and border clearance on both sides, the total door-to-door transit generally requires between two and two-and-a-half hours.

Batam functions as an urban destination known for shopping centres, spas, and seafood establishments, with Nagoya serving as the primary commercial and dining district. Visitors seeking local venues, clinics, and hospitality services can consult the Batam business directory to plan their itineraries, while those exploring regional real estate can view property listings in Batam. Travellers prioritising quiet coastal resorts rather than urban amenities often opt for Bintan, where services predominantly depart from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Singapore Departure Terminals

Ferries bound for Batam depart from two main locations in Singapore: the new Singapore Cruise Centre terminal at HarbourFront, and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (littlebigreddot.com, Instarem).

Singapore Cruise Centre (HarbourFront)

The former HarbourFront Centre terminal closed permanently on 27 July 2026 to allow for the construction of a 33-storey mixed-use development. All maritime passenger operations relocated to the adjacent Singapore Cruise Centre terminal situated at 5 HarbourFront Avenue, Singapore 099549. The facility is identifiable by its red terracotta facade within the HarbourFront precinct.

The move occurred across two distinct stages: Batam Fast Ferry commenced operations from the new site on 7 July 2026, while Horizon Fast Ferry, Majestic Fast Ferry, Sindo Ferry, and Indo Falcon transitioned on 15 July 2026 alongside international cruise vessels. The redesigned facility includes self-service check-in kiosks, automated passport-less immigration lanes, and expanded food and retail outlets. Ferry ticketing counters are situated on Level 1 (Singapore Cruise Centre). Regular departures from this terminal serve Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, Tanjung Balai on Karimun Island, Gold Coast, and Nirup Island.

Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal

Located on the eastern coastline of Singapore, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal manages international departures to eastern Batam and neighbouring islands (Singapore Cruise Centre). Passengers obtain boarding passes and purchase walk-in tickets at the operator counters within the main Terminal Concourse. Scheduled departures from Tanah Merah connect directly to Batam Centre and Nongsapura, in addition to regional services connecting to Bintan.

Batam Arrival Terminals

Ferries from Singapore arrive at five main international terminals in Batam: Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, Nongsapura and Gold Coast in Bengkong. A sixth, smaller route serves Waterfront City (Teluk Senimba), operated by Indo Falcon (Singapore Cruise Centre, Singapore Cruise Centre, BatamFast).

Batam Centre Ferry Terminal

Batam Centre represents the primary administrative and transport gateway on the island. The route connecting HarbourFront and Batam Centre averages 55 to 70 minutes of sea travel (Instarem). The corridor between Batam Centre and Singapore maintains dense traffic, accommodating around 130 ferry services across operators (redBus). Sailings arrive here from both the Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Harbour Bay Ferry Terminal

Harbour Bay provides maritime access situated close to the dining and shopping centres of Nagoya (littlebigreddot.com). Scheduled crossings operate directly between Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront and Harbour Bay.

Sekupang Ferry Terminal

Positioned on the north-western coast of Batam, Sekupang receives vessels arriving from Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront. BatamFast’s current timetable (valid from 17 September 2026) lists daily HarbourFront–Sekupang sailings, some of them operated as Sindo Ferry trips under the two companies’ interline arrangement. An older BatamFast notice about suspended Sekupang trips dates from October 2022 and no longer reflects the schedule. Other operators, including Majestic Fast Ferry and Sindo Ferry, maintain scheduled sailings connecting Sekupang and HarbourFront.

Nongsapura Ferry Terminal

Nongsapura serves the north-eastern coast of Batam. Regular services operate between Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and Nongsapura, run by BatamFast.

Gold Coast Ferry Terminal (Bengkong)

Gold Coast is Batam’s newest international ferry terminal, in Bengkong on the north coast. BatamFast runs HarbourFront–Gold Coast sailings; its timetable valid from 17 September 2026 marks several of these departures as suspended until further notice, so check the operator’s schedule before you book.

Fares, Fuel Surcharges, and Booking Channels

Each operator publishes its own fares and sells tickets on its website and at terminal counters. Majestic Fast Ferry’s regular (non-promotional) fares are S$43 one way from Singapore, S$40 one way from Batam and S$76 return (Majestic Fast Ferry). Indonesian passport holders buying at Sindo Ferry’s counter in Batam pay IDR 365,000 one way or IDR 730,000 return, a rate announced on 24 September 2024 (Sindo Ferry). As an indication of platform prices, booking platforms listed one-way adult fares from Batam Centre to Singapore from about S$38 in September 2026 (redBus); check the operator’s site for the fare on your date.

Ticket prices already include the terminal charges. Singapore Cruise Centre’s passenger departure fee has been S$10 per passenger since 1 November 2022, and BP Batam’s terminal fee on departures from Batam has been IDR 100,000 per passenger since 1 September 2023 (Sindo Ferry, Sindo Ferry).

Fuel surcharge (since March 2026). On top of the fare, every operator now adds a fuel surcharge per passenger, per direction. The amounts differ slightly by operator:

OperatorFrom SGFrom Batam
BatamFastS$6IDR 55,000
MajesticS$6IDR 65,000
SindoS$6IDR 65,000
HorizonS$6IDR 65,000

BatamFast’s surcharge started on 14 March 2026; Majestic, Sindo and Horizon started on 12 March 2026. Majestic and Horizon collect the surcharge at their ticket counters, and it applies to tickets bought before 12 March 2026 too (Majestic, Horizon). Sindo calls its surcharge temporary and says it will adjust it when fuel prices stabilise (Sindo). Carry a little SGD and IDR, or a card, to pay it at check-in.

Departure and Check-In Procedures

Passengers departing from Singapore Cruise Centre (HarbourFront) or Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal must complete a five-stage departure process (Singapore Cruise Centre):

  1. Ticketing: Purchase tickets in advance through operator websites or in person at terminal ticketing counters. Ticket desks are situated on Level 1 at Singapore Cruise Centre (HarbourFront) and within the Terminal Concourse at Tanah Merah.
  2. Check-In: Obtain an official boarding pass by checking in at operator counters, or print out boarding documents online where supported by the specific ferry line. Digital M-Tickets on mobile devices or printed copies should be presented alongside valid photo identification (redBus). Travellers should arrive early to avoid queue delays during check-in. First-time visitors departing from HarbourFront should budget extra time to locate check-in counters inside the new terminal building (littlebigreddot.com).
  3. Baggage Check-In: Travellers carrying hold luggage must deposit items at designated baggage counters. Baggage check-in counters open 60 minutes before departure and close strictly 20 minutes before sailing, but operators set their own cut-offs: Sindo Ferry asks for bags at least 45 minutes before departure and closes its baggage counter 30 minutes before (Sindo Ferry). The terminal’s baggage rules apply to every operator: 20 kg of checked baggage is free per boarding pass, excess is S$1 per kg up to 40 kg per passenger, no single item may weigh more than 30 kg, and the hand-carry bag may weigh up to 10 kg and measure 55 × 40 × 20 cm. Odd-size items such as bicycles or surfboards cost S$10 each (S$14 on Horizon since 2 June 2025) (Singapore Cruise Centre).
  4. Security Screening: Present travel documentation for security verification. Screening departure gates open 45 minutes prior to trip departure and shut 15 minutes before departure. Passengers must have passports and boarding passes ready and empty personal pockets before walking through screening points.
  5. Boarding: Present your physical or digital boarding pass to ferry crew members for boarding verification before embarking the vessel. Follow onboard safety directions, note emergency exits, and locate life jackets as instructed.

Arrival Regulations, Arrival Cards, and Practical Tips

Passengers undertaking cross-border ferry travel must verify regulatory and border formalities prior to sailing:

  • Passport Validity and Immigration: Foreign passports need at least 185 days of validity, must be undamaged, and need a blank page if you will get a visa-on-arrival sticker. Singapore passport holders enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days of tourism (Majestic Fast Ferry). Other nationalities: see our Visa on Arrival guide for Batam.
  • Arrival Cards (both directions): Going to Batam, every traveller, Indonesians included, submits the All Indonesia arrival card within 3 days before arrival; see our All Indonesia Arrival Card guide. Coming back, every traveller, Singapore citizens and PRs included, submits the free SG Arrival Card within 3 days before arriving in Singapore.
  • Time Zone Adjustment: Batam sits within the Western Indonesia Time zone (WIB), which is one hour behind Singapore (littlebigreddot.com). Return ticket schedules and departure bookings must be confirmed against the designated time reference stated on the ticket.
  • Currency and Essentials: Passengers should carry local cash alongside cards to settle terminal fees or surcharges (redBus). Those susceptible to motion sickness should carry appropriate medication.
