Is Batam safe? What Singapore MFA and UK FCDO travel advice says, everyday risks like card fraud and haze, and emergency number 112

Rules and fees change. This guide summarises the official sources below as of 13 October 2026; always confirm with the official source before you travel.

The short version: Batam is not on any area warning list. As of 13 October 2026, the Singapore MFA’s Indonesia page (20 July 2026) and the UK FCDO’s Indonesia advice (updated 18 September 2026) do not mention Batam as a risk. The FCDO’s regional risks section names places such as Aceh and Central Sulawesi. Batam and the Riau Islands are not on it. What follows are the everyday risks, and the fix for each.

What the official advice says

  • Singapore MFA: “You are advised to remain vigilant against possible crime and security threats while travelling … You should avoid protest and demonstration sites.” Singaporeans are encouraged to eRegister their trip. On that page, Batam appears only as the location of a Singapore consulate.
  • UK FCDO: general Indonesia advice on crime, scams, road safety and drugs. The only line that names the Riau Islands is about haze (below).

Crime: what actually happens

  • Card fraud. The FCDO says “Credit card fraud is common. Do not lose sight of your card during transactions.” It also warns that criminals put fake helpline numbers on ATMs. Call only the number on the back of your card.
  • At night, the usual big-city rules apply. Keep to busy, lit streets. Never leave a drink unattended. Book your ride home in the app, not from someone at the door. By city rule, clubs and discos close at 3:30 am (Batam Mayor Regulation No. 11 of 2023). More in our Batam travel tips.

Is it safe to take Grab or Gojek in Batam?

Ride-hail apps (Grab, Gojek’s GoCar, Maxim) are how most people get around Batam. The FCDO’s advice for apps is simple: “check the driver is the same as the person on the app, and share your journey with a friend using the app.”

One local catch: at Batam Centre and Gold Coast ferry terminals, local taxi groups restrict pickups. You meet your Gojek driver just outside the terminal area, a short walk from arrivals (BatamFast, August 2026). Follow the pickup point shown in the app. For airport taxis, agree the fare or the meter before the car moves. Typical fares are in our essentials guide.

Health and environment

  • Haze, about May to November. The FCDO says smoke haze from wildfires “drifts across parts of Indonesia, particularly Riau Islands”. On 15 September 2026, Batam’s mayor issued circular SE 47/2026 on haze, when the city’s air index (ISPU) read 79, “moderate”. The advice: cut outdoor activity when the haze thickens, wear a mask outdoors, drink plenty of water, and see a doctor for shortness of breath, a lasting cough or chest pain (Media Center Kota Batam). Check the Batam weather before a beach or Barelang day.
  • Tap water: “Tap water is not safe to drink in Indonesia” (FCDO). Drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Counterfeit alcohol: the FCDO reports deaths from drinks containing methanol, including drinks “purchased in licensed bars, shops and hotels in tourist areas”, and notes that methanol cannot be detected by taste or smell. Alcohol is sold only to people aged 21 and over, so carry ID.

Laws that catch visitors out

  • Drugs: “Penalties for drug offences are severe and include the death penalty” (Singapore MFA). The FCDO adds that cannabis products, including CBD and medicinal cannabis, are illegal in Indonesia.
  • Going back to Singapore: vapes are banned there, and cigarettes bought in Batam have no duty-free allowance. See what to avoid before your return ferry.

It also works from a phone with no SIM card or a locked screen (Batam Siaga 112). The UK FCDO lists 118 as Indonesia’s ambulance number. Batam’s own service sends ambulances through 112, so call 112 first.

Consulates: Singapore is the only country with a consulate in Batam. It covers the Riau Islands and Riau provinces, and counter services are by appointment only (batam.mfa.gov.sg). Other nationalities are served by their embassies in Jakarta. If you lose your passport, report it to the police first, then contact your embassy or consulate. Hospitals, ports and other contacts are on our emergency guide (in Indonesian).

Insurance: the FCDO warns that “medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of pounds” and advises adequate travel health insurance. The Singapore MFA advises comprehensive insurance if you plan adventure sports.
